Glitter Sparkles
Now we moved back to
the dawn of Hagstrom Electric Guitar time...

1958-9 to be as precise as
we can...
P46 Deluxe

Another model that employs
the
'top of the range' Hagstrom Hi-Fi Chassis Unit,
which was granted patent on 13th June 1958

Buttons in order:
Solo (or Lead)
Acc (or Rhythm)
LH (Bridge and Neck
pickups together)
L (Bridge
Pickup)
H (Neck
Pickup)
O (Off)
Plus a little chrome reset button near ACC

As with all the Glitter models, catch the light in a certain
way, and the chameleon factor comes into view...
These are a couple of very quick shots taken on the evening of arrival - not in
good light or with lots of time!
The Reverse is NOT the White Pearloid.
Did you know Black was an option?

This solid body example is original. So
unlike some other versions this is HEAVY!
Another inspiration for the Swede range that appeared much later?
The pearl effect fretboard is there, the
acrylic transparent covering is also there.
But the whole body is black coming round to a ridged edge where the sparkle
takes over.
There were two modifications soon after manufacture, the bridge was replaced
with a fully adjustable version,
and the Hagstrom Tremolo arm was not standard on this particular model when new
- a unique guitar (unless you know otherwise?)
... and for once "unique" doesn't mean 'butchered'
...more UK pics soon - with a bit more
patience, after all I've played it now, so I might even calm down soon...
FUN TIME!
...the picture up above on
the left has 'items' representing six decades in history
what can you spot?

Strumming by
CDC (2003)
...from Karl E Hagstrom (1991)
The youngest Hagstrom live performer (9) with the oldest
Hagstrom from 59!
If you know better, then let me know (or even
Rob in Canada!)

I am truly grateful for the opportunity
to share this with you, and I hope it helps inform other owners and enquirers
- these pictures below were supplied with the guitar, and represent the views
and angles extremely well:

I wondered what it would be like to play, it felt comfortable - surprisingly
comfortable!
The back of the neck feels rounder - more (dare I say) a bit Fender'ish, almost
an acoustic roundness...

The fretboard feels as good as the Batman - which doesn't apply to all the
glitters - it balances well under finger.

...and the solid weight is so well balanced - it's (YES REALLY) a fabulous
player!!
Most of all thanks to Rudolf for allowing another fine
example to join the Hagstrom UK collection.

So, what
can be done today with a guitar of this type?
Well, lots actually, they're great fun, and still known by the greats if music.
In the recent Mark Knopfler
album "Ragpicker's Dream"
Richard Bennett
can be seem playing for the album (2002)

Notice the "+" and "-" buttons changed to SOLO and ACC
(Lead and Rhythm) in most models,
also a small chrome reset button soon appeared, positioned offset from where
(above) the + and - buttons are placed.
And in the UK - this was then...

Hmmm.... Seventy-Five Pounds...
Now if you're trying to work out the hire purchase, remember we had Pounds,
Shillings and Pennies then
20 Shillings to the Pound, 12 Pennies to the shilling... so that makes it...
... a damn good reason for going decimal! (Oh yes, and there were about 2.5 US
Dollars to the Pound too!)

And by Contrast...in
1962

wait for it...
Esa Harju from Finland knows how to enjoy himself, - to quote:
"ZERO NINE, a group of simple north-eastern Finnish boys, were more than a
little astounded by the experience of playing for 30,000 people at Råsunda
stadium in Stockholm, supporting AC/DC on their tour, letting it ring at the
legendary Marquee club, and drinking backstage vodka in Russia to such an extent
that sometimes I had to ask what country I was in…"
A fascinating guy, you just have to see his website - he has a
lot more to offer, besides some of the most stunning Deluxe Pictures I have ever
seen - here's a taster...

If you know your stuff, then you'll realise this is
NOT A Standard Deluxe. It is listed as a 1962 Deluxe Ä
Model
One of the first (and only)
75 made before the modification into Duck-foot or Batman design
and before the EDP46 models listed in 1963.
