The pickup surrounds had lost a lot of the original Gold Glisten, most likely through sweat and toil at the rhythm (well it's kewl to think that). Still, compared to other parts of the gold hardware they had received the shorter straw for longevity! I like to think the solid and friendly feel of this instrument represents the father figure in the collection. There's something about the deep tones, and impressive looks, it was good to see this minor surgery help him back to peak perfection...

Quite acceptable, but could do better...

Then there there was eBay... and Kjell's 'NOS' Gold surrounds...

Perfect to improve the "old father" of the collection (photos with and without flash)

Spray coating with wet layers of clear polyester lacquer
(now where have I heard of that being done before...)

View the underside of the pickup assembly...
Tip! Straighten the rounded prongs with pliers, and the surrounds slide off with minimum
effort. A tap on the top of the pickup in the centre - with my knuckle - and it was free.

Note the solid block behind the bridge pickup, before the bridge itself.

Comparing the new and old side by side...

Stripped pickups

all secure and sound after 35 years (1968)
No need to adjust the pickup at all, just slide on and secure the new surrounds

Solid block at neck end - that's a nice block of wood here!

The finished articles...  I love that reflection...

TIP! Swap the screws hidden beneath the pickguard to the other end - nice and clean!
Polishing the original gold plating is not a good idea as plating is not very thick!
I highly recommend a clear lacquer carefully applied or sprayed on removed pieces.

NOW....Where's my curly cable... ah yes, switch on the amp...  Bdng, Bdng-Bdng...
