Espana was B&J's answer to the GOYA brand from Hershman.
Hagstrom managed to be involved with both brands (heh heh)
and a Bjarton by any other name

"To own an Espana is to experience the difference between
playing passably and playing well!" The things they would tell us just to
convince us that we really did need to part with our money!!!

It turns out that my guitar is neither an SL-4, nor an SL-3, but an SL-2 (but
with a twist--namely, it has a 1 & 3/4 inch neck, like the "folk guitars" on
page four, rather than the standard 2 inch necks on the "classic" guitars). If
my memory is correct that I paid around $300 for it in 1964, then I was
overcharged--by a dealer who assured me that I was buying the top of the
line--since the SL-2 was selling in 1965 for just $197. But, of course, it could
have been a special order guitar that the customer never picked up and paid for.
